Morning Glories Update

Journal Entry: Thu Jan 10, 2013, 11:31 AM
Had lots of people asking me where the next issue is, so here's a major update!

Issue 24 is now double sized--44 all new pages--not a single reprint page, and will be out the first week of Feb for $3.99.  It'll be part one of the season 1 finale.   Pretty proud of this one--:iconalexsollazzo: is kililng it on colors--he's bringing some serious cinematographer skills to this issue.

Issue 25 will also be double sized and be part 2 of the season one finale for $3.99

Issue 26 will be a regular sized issue, but will only cost you ONE DOLLAR!

Issue 27 will be the season 2 premiere issue, and will be double sized with a price tag of $3.99.  And for the first time ever on this book, it will feature several variant covers from some flat out AMAZING artists.  Some you might expect, some you might not!

2012

Journal Entry: Mon Dec 31, 2012, 3:27 PM
I wanted to say thanks for a great 2012 to all my watchers and readers out there.  It's been a fantastic year!  I did more conventions this year than any year previous--meeting so many great people--readers and fans and new peers.  It was at C2E2 this year that I started to finally feel that maybe I'm part of this industry after all, and not just kidding myself.   2013 is shaping up to be another busy year of traveling--I'll update soon with the shows I'll be at!

Morning Glories kept on keepin on this year.  We kept putting out oversized issues, and it helped me work on my speed.  Plus, our volume 3 trade outsold every Marvel trade paperback the month it was released, so that was a great feather in the cap moment!  And there's great stuff in the works for next year.

I also got to branch out for the first time in about two years.  I had a blast working with Sam Humphries and the fine folk at Boom! Studios on Higher Earth #5.  I almost didn't do the issue, but I'm glad I did.  I enjoy Morning Glories, but it was refreshing to get out of the school for a bit, so to speak.  I want to thank the editorial staff at IDW Publishing for hiring me to do several Cobra covers this year.  Not only did I get that rare opportunity to do some covers, I got to scratch a fanboy itch.  Also, I want to thank good friends Michael Moreci and Steve Seeley for the chance to do a cover for their fantastic book, Hoax Hunters!  It looks like 2013 will be a year I'll be branching out to even more new projects (fingers crossed!).

So, thank you all for buying my books, getting commissions, coming to see me at conventions and signings, and checking out my art.  Thanks to all my friends and colleagues in the industry, my retailer friends, readers, fans, and to my crew on Morning Glories--Nick, Alex, Rodin, Tim and Johnny.

Hope 2013 is an amazing year for all of us!

Zenescope

Journal Entry: Fri Dec 14, 2012, 7:28 AM
My good friend Garry Henderson :icongarryhenderson: posted a very scathing journal about his experiences with comic publisher Zenescope Entertainment.  I highly recommend reading it.  Too often, folks in this industry get ripped off, but are too afraid to  make a fuss about it for fear of being blacklisted.  That's just insane.  If you're owed money, you should get it, and definitely use any (legal) means necessary to do so.  Don't be afraid of being blacklisted--if you're talented and have the drive, your career will remain intact.

It's hard to know who the bad guys are when you're first starting out--publishers like these like to take advantage of naive new talent.  If no one will name names, then publishers like this will continue their shady practices.  I've not worked for them, nor would I ever (I'm not a fan of their content and I've had too many friends get ripped off by them), and I would absolutely recommend anyone I know read this journal before considering to do any work for them: [link]

Wizard World Austin Comic Con

Journal Entry: Thu Oct 25, 2012, 9:15 AM
This weekend, join me at Wizard World Austin Comic Con in the excellent city of Austin, Texas!  I will be at Artist Alley table #2039, with my homeboy, :iconnickpitarra: Nick Pitarra, and our good friend :iconmeganwilson: Megan Wilson.  I should be getting in about an hour or so late on Friday (driving in from Dallas), and staying through Sunday til about 4.  I'll have books and prints and will be doing commissions at the show.

Also, on Saturday, there's a big meet and greet afterparty at Dragon's Lair Comics in Austin, from 8-10, so don't miss that!  Nick and I will be there with Tony Fleecs, Joshua Hale Fialkov, :icondavidmarquez: David Marquez, Rob Guillory and more!

This is my last show of the year, so if you want to get your books signed or get a commission from me, this is your best bet until 2013!

Fan Days and Austin Comic Con

Journal Entry: Mon Oct 8, 2012, 8:51 AM
Fan Days is tomorrow!  Come see me at the show, and if I've not mentioned it yet--if you have the Morning Glories Hardcover, I will draw a free sketch of one of the cast inside.  See you at the show!

Oh, and still taking preorders for Austin!

(original post):
My last two conventions of the year are coming up!  First, the weekend of Oct. 19-21, I'll be at  Dallas Comic Con Fan Days in Irving, Texas at the Irving Convention Center.  The following weekend, Oct. 26-28, I'll be at Wizard World Austin Comic Con at the Austin Convention Center.  Looking forward to both shows, and putting a cap on a great year of doing conventions.  I'll have original art, copies of my latest issues of Morning Glories and Higher Earth, as well as lots of prints!

If you'll be at either of these shows, and want a commission from me, email me at joe(at)supajoe(dot)com for details.  I hardly ever check the notes here, so email's your best bet!

Hope to see you folks there!

And don't worry Morning Glories fans, I haven't left the book.  Working on a new issue now, and issue 22 goes on sale next week! (10/10).  One of my favorites since issue 10.

I'll update again soon with my remaining con schedule.  Already booking dates for 2013 too!  Stay tuned..

Folks, looks like the word is out (courtesy Rich Johnston at Bleeding Cool)--I'm drawing issue 5 of Higher Earth, written by the awesome Sam Humphries from Boom! Studios.  More details soon (and hopefully some art).  Let me just say I'm stoked to be working with Sam; we've been trying to hook up together on something for a while now, and our schedules just lined up perfectly for this.

And no, I'm not leaving Morning Glories.  That's still my baby.  haha.

Heroes Con this Weekend!!

Journal Entry: Wed Jun 20, 2012, 8:36 PM
Quick note to tell everyone that I'll be at Heroes Con this weekend, June 22-24 in Charlotte, NC at the Charlotte Convention Center.  I'll be at Artist Alley Table #751, next to the incomparable Charles Paul Wilson III, artist of the amazing Stuff of Legend.

Real excited about this show!  Lots of great friends to see and I can't wait to meet more Morning Glories fans.  If you're in the area, please come by and see me!  I'll be doing sketches all weekend, and will have original pages, prints and copies of the first three Morning Glories trades (vol. 3 doesn't actually go on sale until next week).

Albuquerque Comic Expo & Heroes Con!

Journal Entry: Fri Jun 1, 2012, 3:02 PM
Next weekend, June 8-10, I'm a guest at the  Albuquerque Comic Expo in New Mexico.  I can't wait--I've heard good things about this show, and the guest lineup looks good!  Should be fun times.  If you're going to be in the area, please come by the show!

I'll be doing sketches at the show, and I'm also currently taking commission preorders.  Email me at joe(at)supajoe(dot)com

And finally, I'll also be at Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC this month on the 22-24.  This one's going to be crazy--all my good buddies like Nick Pitarra, CP Wilson III, Robert Wilson IV, Kevin Mellon, Tradd Moore and Ryan Stegman are all going to be there.  I don't know if that town will survive! haha.  I've got about two to three spots open for commission preorders for that show (orders started coming in in April!), so if you want to get on my list, act quick!

These are the only shows I'm doing for the next couple of months, so I hope to see some of you folks there!

More Conventions!

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 25, 2012, 10:06 AM
I want to start off by thanking everyone who came to see me at Emerald City Con and C2E2 these past couple of weeks.  It's been a whirlwind, but without a doubt, some of the best and most successful convention experiences I've ever had.  So many, many thanks!

To keep the ball rolling, I've got some more shows lined up.  You'll be able to catch me at:

Dallas Comic Con,  in Dallas, Tx, May 19-20
Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC, June 22-24

I'm looking at doing a couple of other shows, but things are tentative at the moment.  If you're going to the above listed shows and want a commission, you can email me at joe(at)supajoe(dot)com to put in a preorder!

ECCC & C2E2

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 12, 2012, 10:21 AM
Last update, 4-9-12

My last show of this three week convention/signing binge is this week!  If you're going to C2E2 and want a commission, I've still got a few spots on my preorder list--my email's at the bottom of this journal if you want to set one up!

I'll be at the show Friday and Saturday only, so keep that in mind.  Also, I'll be on the 'Join the 2D Revolution' panel Friday afternoon at 4, with Doug Hills, Reilly Brown, Lar Desouza & more as we discuss digital art tools in comics!  [link]

/update

Update, 3-26-12

Emerald City Con is this weekend!  My commission list is filling up, so if you'd like to preorder one, do it quick!  I also wanted to mention I'll be doing a couple of signings at the Image comics booth at the show (#310) with writer Nick Spencer: on Saturday, from 6-7 pm and on Sunday April 1 from 12-1 pm.  You can find Image's full programming schedule here: [link]

See you at the show!

/end update

Holy wow, it's been awhile since I updated!  I have a good excuse though, in working to get Morning Glories back on a regular shipping schedule.  Issue 16 came out last month, and #17 should be out at the end of this one.

Anyhow, convention season is now in full swing!  At the end of this month, I'll be at the Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, WA, at table C-07.  Real excited for this show--first time in the Pacific Northwest and I've heard so many great things about this convention.  Hope it's good times!  I also contributed to the show's art book, Monsters & Dames, with this Zoe piece: .  It's available exclusively at the show, and the original will be up for auction to benefit the Seattle Children's Hospital.

After that show, in April, I'll be at C2E2 in Chicago, IL, at Artist Alley table # N13.  Tried for a couple of years to make it to this one, but it didn't work out.  This time, it's on!  haha.  Looking forward to it.

If you're going to be at either of these shows, and would like a commission from me, please email me at joe(at)supajoe(dot)com and we'll set something up.  Don't send me a note here--I rarely check those.

Year end Thank Yous

Journal Entry: Sat Dec 31, 2011, 11:32 AM
Without a doubt, 2011 has been one of the most significant and definitely most bittersweet years of my life, with the good (Morning Glories' success) and the bad (the death of my father.)  I feel more changed this year than ever before.  I'm still in awe that Eisner nominations and being on the New York Times Bestseller list were part of my life this year.  It sometimes felt like a dream.  Before the year's out, I want to thank some folks:

First, big thanks to my brothers-in-arms on Morning Glories, Nick Spencer, Alex Sollazzo, Rodin Esquejo, Johnny Lowe, Tim Daniel and Jim Valentino.  It was such a highlight to do a signing with (most) of you gents this year at San Diego Comic Con.  Sometimes we seem like a dysfunctional family, but I'm so proud of the work we do and hope we'll only get better!

Of course, my biggest thanks for all the fans I met online and at conventions and signings this year.  Any time I have a bad day, I think about your generosity and overall awesomeness you've expressed at shows this year and I'm perked right up.  It's humbling to know that I work on something that resonates with people so much, and for that I'm immensely thankful.  You make it possible for me to do what I love to do!  I hope we can continue to deliver a satisfying comic for you in the coming year, and on a more regular schedule.

Also thanks to all the reviewers, retailers, reporters and bloggers that have helped push Morning Glories this year.  We wouldn't be here without your help!

Lastly, I wouldn't have my sunny disposition were it not for the great new friendships I started this year.  I'm proud to call Nick Pitarra, Juan Castro, Kevin Mellon, Rob Guillory, Kody Chamberlain, Jason Baroody, and Robert Wilson my friends and colleagues, and I'm so glad we met this year.  Working on comics is such a solitary job, and working late into the night all by your lonesome can get old real quick.  Connecting with new friends and peers really helped me this year after I lost my Dad.  I'm thankful to have these guys to banter back and forth with via Twitter and Skype as we wile away the evenings drawing comics!  And also great thanks to my art dealer, Jason Palmer, for always coming through!

In the coming year, I'm looking forward to drawing even more pages than I did this year (which is no small feat, considering the '3 weeks to draw 30+ pages' schedules I've been on), starting a new project with Mr. Joe Keatinge and hitting up some conventions I've not been to before.  I'm hoping to take on more small projects this year, hopefully time will be on my side.  Here's to  a successful and kickass 2012!

Live Art Show + Dallas Signing this Weekend!

Journal Entry: Thu Dec 8, 2011, 12:35 PM
Live Art Show + huge in-store signing this weekend!  If you're anywhere near the Dallas area, (or heck, you can be from anywhere, it's cool!) you must come to the Billiard Bar tomorrow night at 9 pm.  The party's going down with a live art show/charity auction to benefit Genesis Women's Shelter.  We've got a fantastic lineup of artists participating, including Rob Guillory, Nick Pitarra, Kody Chamberlain, Robert Wilson IV, Jake Ekiss, Kristian Donaldson, and many more (+ lil' ol' me).   We'll have tunes from Nerdcore rapper Adam Warrock as well as from DJ Rob Vik.  Come hang out with us and bid on the artings, all for a good cause.  (Here's a peek at a piece I'm planning on contributing: [link]

And join us the following day at Zeus Comics in Dallas for a massive signing, from 11 am to 3 pm.  I will be bringing Morning Glories Deluxe Editions with me.  Yes, these are the recalled ones, but I will dialogue the error page correctly (or with whatever you want) and throw in a free sketch with purchase.  This will be my last signing for the year!

Hope to see a lot of you there.  It's going to be fun times!  For more info, here's the press release: [link]
